Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a first-year teacher, I have had the pleasure of working with beautiful and bright bilingual students! My students are hard-working, responsible, and determined to succeed! Our school is a Title I school which limits us to the resources available to us. Over 84% of our students receive free and reduced-priced breakfast and lunch. Despite the challenges they face daily, our students come to school ready to learn.
We feel so lucky to be able to learn in Spanish AND English every day, in our dual- immersion classroom.
My students know that their knowledge of two languages will benefit them in the long run. They also get so excited when they can switch from one language and back to the other!
Our school's dual-immersion program not only supports student bi-literacy but also cultural diversity and educational equity. Many of my students are English Language Learners, where their first language is Spanish, so having that be our main instructional language has been a big way to differentiate instruction in our classroom. They feel like they are in a safe learning environment where they can express themselves in their native language.
My Project
As a first year teacher, I strive to continue to learn and grow as a bilingual/ dual-immersion educator. Teaching in a dual-immersion classroom has been one of the most rewarding parts of teaching. Getting to teach in my first language is special and I love that I can help foster bilingualism and bi-literacy in my students.
I want to continue to learn more strategies that can help me become a stronger bilingual educator.
This two-day institute will allow me to connect with experienced grade level experts and trainers, who will share their expert advice on promoting a strong dual-immersion classroom. I will also learn strategies to work with my diverse students who are English Language Learners and Spanish Language Learners. This is also geared towards new teachers like myself, which makes it an even greater learning opportunity.
I am asking for lodging, transportation, and food costs and I hope that you can support me in making this project come to life! I will be staying at the hotel of the conference location and will be flying there since it's a bit far from where I am located. Breakfast and lunch will be provided so I just need to provide my own dinner and snacks which I plan on getting near the hotel.
