Summer Fun With Georgia Freshwater and Coastal Ecosystems
Help me give my students aquariums with live fish native to our area. Also, provide them with the opportunity to dissect and learn the anatomy of a crayfish and a pregnant shark.
I live and work in Putnam County, Ga. Our school is a Title 1 school in an extreme poverty area, as most of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. As with many public schools, the opportunities provided at school are, for many of our students, the only opportunities they will receive.
This summer we are providing enrichment camps to provide opportunities that many of our students would not be afforded otherwise.
During this time they are also fed breakfast and lunch as to make sure that they have at least 2 healthy meals for those days.
I will be teaching our students about the ecosystems in our local lakes including plants, fish, and much more! We will also introduce them to the ecosystems of our Georgia coastline.
Thank you for considering blessing our magnificent students with new, fun, and educational opportunities.
My Project
Students will spend the summer having a blast as they "dive" into ecosystems of our local lakes as well as the beautiful Georgia coastal areas. They will have the opportunity to see live baby bass, bluegill, and catfish in a habitat that they will create in aquariums. They can watch how they interact with one another, with their environment and watch them continue to grow.
Hands-on learning is one of the most powerful tools to create an experience that EVERYONE will remember!!
Students will have the chance to learn that crayfish are also part of our ecosystem. Then they will get to learn the anatomy of the crayfish as they dissect and actually see and touch each part of the body!
As we conclude our series on our local freshwater systems, students will be introduced to our beautiful Georgic coastal areas. During this part of this learning experience, students will be able to dissect a REAL SHARK which is pregnant with a pup.
This summer adventure is sure to spark each child with an interest in our Georgia fresh and salt water ecosystems and challenge them to continue learning.
