My Project
The Farm to School Garden is a project of the Food Services Department. We host hands-on learning experiences for students through the spring, summer, and fall seasons with the goal of increasing food literacy and providing positive food experiences. Overtime, we want to improve access to these foods, help students build lifelong eating habits that promote health, and have fun doing so.
When children understand the origins of their food, they are more likely to make informed choices about what they eat.
If they know that fruits, vegetables, and whole foods come from the earth, they might develop a greater appreciation for healthy foods. It can help them move away from processed and unhealthy food choices, understanding the long-term benefits of eating fresh, whole foods.
By understanding where food comes from, kids can also learn about local farming and agriculture. They may become more inclined to support local farmers and food markets, boosting local economies and encouraging sustainable farming practices. This also ties into lessons about how global food systems work, creating a more globally aware generation.
Overall, teaching kids where their food comes from not only enhances their health and well-being, but it also contributes to their development as responsible, thoughtful individuals who care about their environment and make conscious choices in their daily lives. Understanding food helps them connect more deeply with the world around them and encourages a mindset that supports sustainability and healthier living.
