My students love art! They have created beautiful paintings, drawings, and collages all year long. The creativity this year has been amazing!
Art doesn't just inspire students to be creative; it hones their fine motor skills, teaches them to be responsible for their materials, encourages metacognition, and sparks conversations about all manner of things.
Far too often, the arts are overlooked or neglected as more traditional academics are pushed on children at younger and younger ages. I heartily believe in the value of art for art's sake, but in my classroom, the students learn many of their academics through are, as well. They learn about shapes, numbers, counting, colors, and letters through their art. Most of my students are going to kindergarten in the fall, and the opportunity to maintain all these skills over the summer would be very beneficial. However, I know that many of my students do not have at home the art supplies they need to continue to be creative over the summer. I would like to provide the students with these materials to do so.
