This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A first grader's biggest challenge is learning to read. A strong component to beginning reading skills is understanding word families and the many words you can read and write from just a handful of words.

I teach 22 super sweet students!

This year I have 11 students who are working below level and are struggling in the area of reading and fluency of reading. My goal is to add engaging word family activities to our daily routine to build a better understanding of how words work. I want to impart the knowledge that if you can read and write a group of words, you can change the initial sounds to make more words!

My Project

The magnetic letter tiles will be used in my first grade classroom to build a foundation of word construction with a hands-on opportunity. The CD of word family songs will reach my students who are auditory learners and will bring movement and fun into our daily routine. The word family practice cards allow students to use dry erase markers that are always exciting for first graders to use! Hot dot cards will be a new opportunity in my class for independent practice as seat work or center work. The word family books will be used to read as a whole group, to complete word building activities, and to send home as family reading opportunities.

My students deserve an opportunity to see how easy it can be to learn to read!

I hope to reach my students by imparting the knowledge of word family reading and writing by exposing the information in a variety of ways. Cat, hat, bat, splat and flat...here we come! We are ready to read!
