We study the artist Kandinsky and his unique connection with art and music. My older students also draw an instrument in their abstract picture. Every grade level really connects to this project because it is more about how they \"feel\" instead of how their art \"looks\". \r\n\r\nWe listen to music while we work like Kandinsky did. They were so excited to get to use our new neon oil pastels and neon paints. They enjoyed using the bright colors and spent extra care on their color selections. They talked about the differences between the colors for different instruments, shapes, lines, and sounds. They expressed their appreciation for other people contributing to our choices in art. I am so grateful to donors choose and Extra Yard for helping fund our classroom. We now have comfortable seating areas in the classroom for reading times. The students love them and take care to treat the new furniture with care. They take turns sitting on the special seats in class and it is a place of comfort for them. In addition, the purchase of class novel sets have already been read. With the grant I purchased two class sets that gave every student in the fifth grade a novel in their hands. We choose \"I Survived: American Revolution\" because of the extension it would provide for the social studies unit on the American Revolution. The students sincerely loved this novel and I feel that many students have caught the reading bug with this book. They are asking to read after work completion constantly. The additions in my classroom are precious to our students and have added to a happy classroom climate.
