Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I would like to introduce you to my special class. We are Mrs. Tabash's First Grade class from Apopka, Fl. All of my students receive free lunch here at school because their parents' income falls into the poverty level that qualifies them for it; meaning, they struggle financially to make ends meet on a daily basis. Besides their financial struggles, most of my students are English Language Learners or E.L.L.. Some of them live only with one parent or are raised by a relative because they have been taken away from their own parents.
Their financial situation doesn't allow them to provide these students with language enriching tools like magazines subscriptions or trips to the theater, museums or simply buying books for them.
I know these children are special because no matter what happens at home, they have lots of potential to be anything they want in the future. There are highly intelligent boys and girls in this classroom trying their best everyday. They deserve an opportunity to succeed, and you can help me to give them a push!
My Project
The Scholastic Magazine subscription will allow me to provide Common Core State Standards with high interesting articles including amazing photographs for students to make connections to writing, practice reading skills, and acquire vocabulary. These magazines would also provide comprehension activities and online extension activities to be used in the classroom.
The reading book set would help my students to practice reading skills, build vocabulary, and increase comprehension while having fun.
The highlighters would be used by the students to practice annotation skills during close reading activities. They could use them on their own magazines!
This project also will help to bring down the cost of photocopies that I rely on to teach Close Reading.
All of these materials will contribute to make reading a fun way to teach and learn. Please help them become successful readers.
