My Students
I work at a wonderful school whose founders share my teaching philosophy. We are challenged, however, financially and do not have adequate funds to purchase curriculum and technology needed for a 21st Century classroom and new FL standards.
My biggest challenge is meeting the needs of a very diverse group of students.
My students' abilities range from very high performing to very low on the achievement spectrum with some in between. I have to differentiate my lessons in both reading and math. I do guided reading lessons in small groups for each level. I also meet with students for enrichment and intervention in math. It is the expectation of my school that all students gain 1.05 years growth each year regardless of where they were when they begin the year. We are also expected to raise our low children to grade level within three years. This is very difficult to do when you don't have the appropriate books you need or the technology to access text on line. My students are also deficient in technology skills that are now required for state testing.
My Project
My students will be using the two Chromebooks to access text online that we will use for guided reading lessons. Last year I had to make copies of the stories we were using each week for the students. They will also use programs like RAZ Kids and Core Clicks to read stories at their level and respond to comprehension questions. They can advance on these programs at their own pace. They will use math sites on my portaportal to improve their math facts. They are expected to complete 30 correct math facts in 2 minutes by the end of the year. I will also be able to use programs like Nearpod and many others I learned about at a technology conference this summer. I also like to do authentic service learning projects with my students. This often involves working in groups and researching topics for our projects. The Chromebooks would be an excellent tool for this.
Your donations will be invaluable in helping to advance my students at their individual levels in both reading and math as well as provide really authentic lessons in other disciplines.
The technology will help my students become more tech savvy preparing them for online testing. It would enable me to provide for my students the level of instruction they all deserve especially those students that lack technology resources at home.
