Help me give my students the basic school supplies (unifix cubes, crayons, and notebooks) to assist in their distance learning. My students are 6 or 7 years old, having hands on materials will aide in their learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Working in the largest urban school district in Connecticut, with limited/bare minimal supplies, our students have had to do away with a lot. My students come from an urban community where poverty is high without this unprecedented pandemic we are facing. Students didn't have the opportunity to bring home the materials I had for them in the classroom. When we left we thought it was only for a week. My parents, unfortunately, have either had to take a leave of absence from work to care for their child, or have been "temporarily" laid off, due to the economic shut down.
Thankfully and un-thankfully my families are all too familiar with having to do without.
Gratefully my families are offered up to 3 meals per day; some extras given on Fridays for the weekend. If I was able to take even the smallest amount of stress, even guilt off of my parents, I'd be grateful. To give my students something "new", yet familiar, and fun to use while learning from home, would warm my heart and make me feel better knowing that all my students were equipped with the same materials!
My Project
Receiving these materials will aid in making distance learning a bit easier for over 20 students. Students at this age, learn using a variety of strategies and manipulatives; the notebooks for drawing a problem out, cubes to help see the numbers visually etc. This project will supply some of those needed materials. Students had these materials readily accessible to them in the classroom. If they are able to use these familiar models and materials it provides them with a sense of security. Parents can take the worry of how they’re going to get their children these supplies. Having something the students know, and how to use, will hopefully ease the "fear" and boost their confidence while their learning something new, in an unfamiliar way.
