Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Spain, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guatemala, China, Morocco, India... These are the countries where my students have come from. My bilingual classroom is one of two high school bilingual classrooms in our district. My bilingual classroom is a wonderful mix of cultures and ideas. Words I would use to describe my students are: hard workers, committed, creative, and outgoing, even though they are coming from low-income families. In November 2017 we had an influx of students displaced from Puerto Rico because the Hurricane Maria. After eight months, these students arriving at our school are still facing the loss of the comfort of their homes and their country and are faced with transitioning into a new community and school system while attempting to develop proficiency in a new language. My students areas of need are: math, science, English, reading comprehension and use of technology.
My Project
Chromebooks with microphone and headphone accessories will provide my Bilingual students access to differentiate and learn at their own pace. These donations will create a supportive environment to achieve academic success while maintaining their native language skills. Further, this will allow them to develop their English language acquisition and the benefits of growing up bilingual culture will be afforded to them.
Chromebooks for my classroom will help my bilingual students' language skills and academic proficiency, support their transition to English, and prepare them for the mainstream classroom.
This technology will help my students increase their English fluency and proficiency while maintaining their first language skills as they study their History, Civics and Computer Applications classes while applying their cultural diverse perspectives.
Many technology tools and software will be utilized, such as Google Apps and Extension tools (translate, screencasting, Talk and Comment, Speakit), Discovery Education, CK-12 Foundation and Vocabulix. For the next 180 days, students will be improving their academic and technology skills!
