Succeeding Through READing

My students need 35 copies of "READ" Magazine.

I teach college prep (Honors)9th Grade English classes at a High Impact/ High Poverty high school in North Carolina.

Many students are below level in reading largely because of literature that is of low interest or which is not recognized by them as relevant. They will often read literature of their own choosing while ignoring literature in the textbook. READ Magazine offers high interest articles, advice on improving writing, modern selections, and a fresh take on the classics of literature that will allow me to instruct my college-bound freshmen in new and more exciting ways.

Using READ Magazine will expose students to high interest literature (both the classics and modern lit). READ Magazine's helpful "How To" articles will teach students to experiment with writing in various genres including plays (which can be performed in class or for the school) and screenplays (which will be used in student movie projects - classroom and YouTube).

When provided with supplemental reading materials that are topical, relevant, and fresh, students will be more actively engaged in the learning process. While READ Magazine is not designed to replace textbooks, the publication takes themes explored in great literature and builds a bridge to current events, pop culture, and modern adaptations to help students understand the universality of those themes. Students will be able to realize that each generation faces basic struggles of identity, autonomy, love, and loss and will be able to read about, write about, and internalize those concepts themselves.
