Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
If they don't have it, it's my job to get it for them... My students are predominately Black and Latinx teens who travel from some of New York City's low-income neighborhoods to our school on the Upper West Side. The journey from their neighborhoods to our school is full of conflict and contrasts. They pass scores of exclusive private schools, zoned schools and screened schools in order attend our unscreened, Title I school. The vast majority of our student population qualifies for a free or reduced-price lunch. They sometimes come to school without the necessary supplies.
There are many factors that could serve to impede the success of my students, however, they consistently push through and persevere.
Every day, they come to school ready to question, ready to learn.
My Project
I am seeking funds to purchase a sublimation printer and ink. I will be working with the subdivisions of Global Cares, the community service club I facilitate, the Visual Arts department. Students will collaborate to design their community service initiative logos. Each subdivision of the Global Cares service club engages in advocacy or action that is intended to help address/rectify an issue of concern in our community. Issues include: access to education and health care, equality and senior inclusion. Additionally, students will work with the Visual Arts department to compose a graphic intended to bring attention to the human rights issue in question. I would like to provide students with the opportunity to transpose their design creations on t-shirts as a means of not only bringing awareness to these causes, but making these items available for purchase to raise funds for these issues as well. For this, my students and I will require a sublimation printer and ink.
