Studying Light

My students need prisms, mirrors, flashlights, and study materials to study light in a hands-on fashion and truly understand this complex concept.

Third grade class at charter school needs to light up the room! I teach at a charter school that is founded on the principle of project based-learning. This means that my students and I work together to create projects that challenge their ability to think critically, apply what they know to new situations, work together, and solve problems. My class is comprised of 18 students who love to learn and is sometimes filled with 36 more from the other third grade classrooms!

Since we are a charter school that is based on project based learning, we don't teach using textbooks or prescribed materials. As a teacher, I love it, but as my creativity about how to teach a certain topic takes over, there's no telling where it will take me and if I'll have the resources to complete it. My class is going to be starting a project about light next trimester and I have created an project that I think they will love that lets them explore and develop ideas on their own (with a little guidance from me:). The only problem is that since it is an investigative project, we need materials for the hands-on experimentation. I want my students to have access to the materials they need to make their own discoveries.

In order for students to be able to explore the concepts of light, I want them to have certain materials be accessible to them. They will need flashlights, prisms, and mirrors. I have inquiries planned for them that include different combinations of these materials and sometimes all three together! I just know that my students would learn so much from being able to experiment on their own and see for themselves how light travels and behaves instead of learning about it from a book or in a movie. I want them to explore and discover for themselves and really take ownership of their learning.
