As a special education teacher, many of my students have struggled to gain basic reading decoding and comprehension skills. When their reading levels are below grade level expectations, some students can become discouraged and not want to read in class. Some of them are embarrassed that their books look younger than their classmates. As a consequence, sometimes they won't read at all or will choose books that are too difficult for them, and, therefore, they're not building their essential reading skills. If they do read the books written at their level, they can often be boring as they're typically aimed at younger students. The graphic novels and phonics novels I chose are written in a way that captures students' interest about topics that are engaging and important to them in reader-friendly language they can decode. This can make all the difference in engaging my students to read, read, read!
