Students Will Strongly Benefit From Acid/Base Investigations

My students need pH, and Titrations AP Chemistry Kits to understand the properties of acid/base neutralization and titrations. These 2 types of labs give them a hands-on opportunity to investigate and learn.

My Students

My approach for this year is to make the students honors chemistry experience exciting and meaningful. I have added technology into the classroom through my own purchases, generous parent donations and a Chuck Miller grant. Now I want to continue this by incorporating relevant labs into every topic.

This years honors chemistry students are very intelligent, confident, and show an interest in the topic.

They are excited when they get a chance to get out of their seats and participate in investigative activities. Many of them may be interested in continuing their chemistry knowledge by enrolling in AP chemistry next year and I would like for them to have the confidence in the curriculum and lab experience to do so. I am thankful to teach your children at one of the best high schools in the nation. Unfortunately, we have limited funds for lab equipment and chemicals. Through the continued support of the parents, I can create an atmosphere that will allow the students to become critical thinkers while they communicate and collaborate with their lab partners in hands-on chemistry experiments. These two acid/base activities will help give them a better understanding of the topic and further help them prepare for AP chemistry if they choose to go that route.

My Project

Learning about properties of acids/bases, buffers, and pH can be a challenge for any student. To help them truly understand not just the conceptual part but also the math behind the topic, students would benefit from dynamic and relevant labs in which they will explore neutralization reactions between acids and bases and also perform titration which are a large part of AP chemistry. There are two labs that I am very interested it having the students perform. One is ideal for leading into discussions about titrations, acids, bases, pH, buffers. In the other 2-part experiment, students determine the pH ranges of 4 acid-base indicators and use provided titration curves to select the appropriate indicators for a strong acid/strong base titration and a weak acid/strong base titration. Students evaluate the effectiveness of their selected indicators by performing several microtitrations. Also, the characteristics of strong acid/strong base and weak acid/strong base titrations are examined.

One of my goals is for the students to feel confident enough in honors chemistry in case they decide to enroll in Advanced Placement Chemistry next year.

So far this year the students have benefited from donations and grants. I would like to continue this by purchasing these two labs BEFORE we get to the topic in the second semester. I know neutralization and titrations are apart of the AP curriculum and I believe that all the students will benefit from at least participating in these labs.
