Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. To combat the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever, and very spontaneous.
They like to move. They love to read, and they love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
Our school would like to provide for those students in need with a backpack and school supplies. We are going to give crayons, folders, and pencils. These school supplies can get very expensive depending on the number of children you might have and worst if you are homeless. In our school we have many families who are transitioning from very difficult situations and become homeless. Many students come to school hungry and would like a snack through out the day. It's important to be able to have a paper bag full of snacks. They asked me sometimes if I have granola bars or snacks in my classroom. It's really sad when I don't have any snacks available to share with them.
They are able to pick some snacks to take them with them for after school.
Many of our students attend after school until very late and they become hungry. They get a small snack but it may be their dinner.
We would love to conserve their art projects by using the laminating sheets since many projects don't get saved. We need staplers to be able to staple the snack bags that they can take with them.
