Students Want to Take Charge of their Learning!

My students need 73 headphones to complete independent work on our online learning resources while using their student Chromebooks.

My Students

Beginning our new year on a different campus, the students are beyond excited to get new opportunities to take lead of their learning in the classroom. Students come from various portions of Oakland as well as surrounding towns in the bay area.

The students focus on becoming useful members of a technology-based society though community connected projects.

We are a diverse school, both socioeconomically and racially, and embrace those differences in the Spanish classroom.

Specifically in Spanish, students work 90% in the target language, finding meaningful ways to learn about Latin history and culture while also making connections to their own first language and traditions.

By making engaging lessons and projects, we aim to have students learn Spanish in exciting ways. These students are at a STEAM school, where each student has a Chromebook to use during school hours. Lastly, the students are in a student-led classroom, where I give them freedom to build upon their previous knowledge with new ideas.

My Project

We are a 1:1 Chromebook to student school. These headphones would provide students (especially those who do not own their own) with a class set of headphones to use during instructional time.

Students rely greatly on their Chromebook being an extension of their learning.

Without headphones, students have difficulties watching tutorials, doing review exercise, and making projects that involve recording and editing. These headphones would give students access to their learning, and since they are over-the-ear, the students will be able to share headphones from class to class.

Having materials to use in the classroom makes transitions and class time more purposeful and engaging. Students may also utilize these headphones as a support for an IEP, or an ESL student who is practicing language. Having individual headphone sets allows students to work at their own pace, without feeling the need to move ahead of watch specific portions of lessons due to sharing headphones.

This also alleviates the pressure to have specific headphones at school, as we would be able to provide students with headphones to use. We would also clean the headphones and hang them after each use.

With these headphones, students will be working with computer software to film, create, and edit culturally relevant videos about Oakland, the latina population in Oakland, and various other topics depending on their Spanish course. Other teachers in the school will also be able to utilize this, including Hack Club, where students take apart and rebuild computers, and design code.
