Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Henry Ford once said, "Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it." Students in my classroom are learning how to be critical thinkers. Life is a continuing reflection and analysis of skills, knowledge, and experiences that we learn and grow from.

My AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students are intellectually curious, verbally expressive, visually stimulated, and grateful for the opportunity to expand their knowledge.

AVID is a college readiness and preparedness class for students that are traditionally referred to as "in the middle." They may be the first in their family to go to college; may represent groups that are historically underserved in our colleges/universities; and/or need support and guidance to expand their skills and goals. AVID's mission is to support and develop the students' skills needed for success in today's global society as they work towards college The majority of students at my school are Latino, followed by White, Asian, Pacific Islander, and African American. 30% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Students at our school reflect the socioeconomic, cultural, religious, and ethnic diversity found throughout California.

My Project

AVID students participate in tutorial groups every Tuesday and Thursday. AVID students work together in small groups to help one another through the inquiry (questioning) process to help solve or answer questions they have from their four academic classes. Tutorial is not tutoring, with a tutor taking the student step by step through a question. Tutorial is instead a focused inquiry-based session during which the students ask focused, pointed questions to help a student work through the critical thinking process to solve their own problem. The idea is that the students learn to rely on themselves and the critical thinking process in order to address questions when they come up. Students also learn public speaking, note-taking, research, and organizational skills through tutorials. My students need 5 dry erase easels for their bi-weekly inquiry-based tutorials.

The students are responsible for the set-up and take down of the boards, and whiteboards with this style of legs and frame will last much longer and be more durable than the boards we have now.

This style of whiteboard will also make tutorials more efficient. Our current tutorial whiteboards are falling apart, literally. The legs do not always lock in place correctly and the boards have fallen over during tutorials. Pieces of the framing have cracked and fallen off, creating sharp edges.
