Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school supports a diverse group of students growing up in a high poverty capital city. My students attend a Title I school and all of the students in my school receive free lunch. Many students come to class with limited ability to speak English and communicate with others. Several of my students have ADHD, special education and social emotional needs, fundamental life needs, as well as language needs.
Many of my students have experienced things that are hard to imagine or understand; from living in refugee camps, leaving a parent behind as you travel to a foreign country, experiencing the loss of a loved one, my students face many challenges.
They live in extreme poverty, have been or are homeless, live with domestic violence and abuse being their reality. Living in the inner city, drugs and gangs are a problem. Some are expected to care for their siblings at ages as young as 9 or 10. Most come from other countries where they don't have the same access to a quality education. All are in need of support.
My Project
Each day my students have the opportunity to come to school and learn in an environment that is new to them. Many of my students come to school without the necessary materials to achieve success. That is why I am asking for necessary supplies for learning in the 21st Century.
Whether it is completing math assignments, collaborating, or using them with clipboards; dry erase markers are a necessity to classroom engagement and learning.
Students love to use them daily.
This is an ESL classroom, so it is important to have colorful papers and worksheets. My students come to class having to learn colors and names of things that we use everyday. It is much easier when things are in color. They also need everyday items like pencils and highlighters.
Finally, my students experience four seasons, for many of them this is something new as they tend to come from tropical climates. This means many of them end up getting sick, for this reason we need disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer.
