Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a school where 85% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch. My students are aged 3-5 years old, and all have Individualized Education Plans. My students are curious, full of energy and life, and always eager to learn! They love learning new skills and are proud of their own successes and those of their peers. My ultimate goal is to give my students a positive learning experience in a school setting, setting the foundation for a love of learning, and a love of school.
Students learn best through hands-on experiences and through the process rather than always having to produce a product.
We are a classroom family learning patience, empathy, and acceptance for everyone.
My Project
My students are not yet reading, but they are learning how get along with their peers, learning to regulate their emotions, learning letters, numerals, colors and shapes. Students are learning that to complete some tasks there is a sequence of steps that need to be completed in a specific order. My students are learning that there is a sequence to the daily routines at school, and they are learning that when we read stories there is a beginning, a middle and an end. Bringing sequencing activities, games, and puzzles into our classroom will give my students more visuals and hands-on opportunities that will help them when sequencing numbers, story elements and events.
Having the Story Sequencing Cards Complete Set and the Size and Sequence Farm Puzzles will allow my students age appropriate materials to explore and understand that there is a logical order of how a story will take place as well as how to arrange objects by size.
My students continue to be as curious as ever and by adding visual cards and puzzles to explore and process sequencing, my students will understand the beginning, middle and end of a story as well as begin to retell stories. Students will also begin to understand that patterns are a sequence that repeats.
Students will become more independent and engage in positive peer interactions as they work in small groups to complete a sequence card set, a sequencing floor puzzle or sequencing numeral monkeys or numeral keys. Students' cognitive development will increase as they determine which picture comes first second, last, etc. in the different amount of sequence card sets. Students will begin to demonstrate a recollection of stories and patterns and this in turn can help with their receptive language development in following multi-step directions in the classroom.
