Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a music teacher for an elementary school in the East Bay area. I teach music to many sections of first through fourth grade classes. The students at my school represent a variety of cultural backgrounds. Our campus represents students and staff from a multitude of ethnicities. The diversity of our staff and students makes working at our school both interesting and educational because we continually learn from each other's backgrounds and experiences.
Each week, the students come to music class enthusiastic and ready to learn.
I feel happy and blessed every morning as I come to school ready to teach music to these fantastic, motivated learners. The students I teach definitely have a passion for learning music.
My Project
The tubano drums I am requesting will make a huge difference in our classroom learning experiences. In particular, the rhythmic learning component of our class is where the students will experience heightened interest if we receive these tubano drums. The students in my classes love to stand and kinesthetically experience the learning principles. Tubano drums require that the students will stand behind the drum and kinesthetically perform the rhythmic patterns onto the top of the drum head. We have smaller hand drums which the other students will then echo back to the tubano drums player's initial rhythm pattern.
We will definitely use these tubano drums during our winter and spring concerts.
Having students perform the percussion to our songs during concerts is an exciting experience for the student and also an attention-grabber for the audience. There is a feeling of ownership that the students experience when they perform their own accompaniment to our vocal concert songs. Tubano drums provide a calming, mindfulness in the classroom when used to create community drumming circles. Also, the tubano drums support our unit on using culturally responsive instruction in the classroom.
