Our students have limited access to computers. Our school's computer lab has 11 year old computers. Our classrooms have limited technology. You wouldn't believe how much fun students have learning when using computers. Computers are definitely one way to engage students in learning.
We have a classroom of 28 students from all backgrounds.
A few have no access to technology at home. We also have a group of students from a wide range of cultures. Our school is large with almost 900 students. Our school's goal is to increase classroom technology as part of our modernization goals. Part of our goal is to have all grade levels have equal access to technology especially in the area of laptops. As our school is located in California we are facing the most serious budget cuts creating a real crisis for trying to obtain student resources.
My Project
Our students can't get enough of technology in any form. Merely connecting a laptop to a projector is enough to keep students engaged and learning. Using a laptop during our workshop time is the activity students all want to choose. The more technology our students get, the fairer it becomes for access purposes. Students need these laptops to do research mainly in science and history. Students are given time in class to research reports and take notes.
Best of all students go to teacher directed websites that totally reinforce what is being learned in class. This by itself makes the purchase totally worth it. The laptop can be used as an intervention tool for struggling students. Another wonderful part is the fact that computers can keep track of student data allowing teachers to focus on areas of concern. The possibilities are endless!

You can just see the energy level increase 100% when children are engaged with computers. Many teachers require reports to be researched and then typed up. A laptop is the perfect tool for achieving both. Once students get the hang of word processing at a young age, the easier life will become in their future. Just knowing the power of a laptop and its capabilities are enough to make students excited about what will be expected of them!
