My students need the following items to successfully participate in orienteering. The course markers are what they find and the control punches are the way students mark their progress through their maps!
This school has a very neighborhood-feel in an urban area. We are a K-8, and the middle schoolers are truly great with the elementary students. We run an alternative school program and new experiences are always a wonderful addition to our program.
Because we run an alternative program, we are a 'choice school' and students from all over the city can choose to attend.
We have a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. We also have a strong LGBTQ community.
They are the most accepting group of students I have worked with. All students are welcome and all experiences are looked at as a benefit and they get truly excited for them!
My Project
In orienteering, a map and compass are used to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain, and normally moving at speed. Orienteering has been likened to a scavenger hunt in the woods, but it’s much more than that! Orienteering provides many benefits like mental challenges, lifetime skills, physical effort, and loads of fun and excitement!
As a Physical Educator, providing new and exciting ways for students to stay active is incredibly important!
This is a fun way for students to learn how to be active for life, all while learning the important skill of map reading.
According to Brain Rules, exercise improves cognition and boosts brain power. Getting quality physical education helps students learn and focus better in a classroom setting. This project helps my students get a quality physical education!
