My Students

Many students at my school come from low income homes where access to learning is limited. Even though many of them have environmental and financial barriers, most of them come to school curious and eager to learn. Their enthusiasm is infectious and inspires me to do my best to create high interest lessons in a positive, creative environment. Because I will be teaching all fourth grade classes, I will have several students with special needs including autism, cognitive disabilities, and attention deficit disorders.

My Project

What is the best way to learn? I mean how do we get students to thoroughly understand deep and difficult concepts? This is a multifaceted question with not a “one-size-fits-all” answer, but what I’ve found in my 20 years of teaching experience is that when we ask anyone to do this one activity, we can almost guarantee success! What do we ask them to do? We ask them to TEACH! When students are required to understand something so well that they must clearly convey it to others, they will ultimately learn at the highest of levels!

The iPad bundle that I am requesting would allow my students to first research a science and engineering concept and then create a video presentation that would help their peers understand.

By using the iPads in collaborative groups to create an iMovie presentation, students would not only be able to teach and learn, but also be encouraged to get creative through editing and adding visuals. Fourth graders are talented, intelligent, and tech geniuses when given the opportunity to explore. My students crave the spotlight and would be extremely motivated to learn if they were given the task of researching and creating a learning presentation with iPads in our science classroom.
