My Students

Located in the nation's capital, the school where I teach serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families. My work is complex as I navigate how to build relationships and community across lines of difference like race, class, language, and country of origin.

As a Language Arts teacher working with primarily English learners, my most important task as a teacher rests on my ability to fully articulate the power, complexity, and impact of language.

To communicate is to learn to advocate for oneself and one's community, and that reality is the cornerstone for what I do.

My students learn the importance of vulnerability as they develop their capacity to communicate through reading, writing, listening, and speaking. No experience is more humbling or profound than when a student potential a student has fully realized through their dedication to themselves and their pursuit of knowledge and self-expression.

My Project

I recently taught my students the slang word "hangry" as a way to describe a combination of hunger and anger. Given that I teach third grade, the students have started using this word to describe their voracious appetites for new books.

My students are hungry (or hangry) for reading, and they are in desperate need of the best recent novels from this year and in recent years.

Currently, I have very few novels in my classroom library that have been recently published, and with 42 students in total, this is not acceptable! My students keep begging me for some "new classics" so they can read them and see how the storylines of new, unknown characters play out.

I am requesting a variety of highly acclaimed novels, including but not limited to the following titles: Best Friends, New Kid, The World Ends in April, More to the Story, I Can Make This Promise, and Other Words for Home. These texts are culturally responsive and feature beautifully diverse narratives that my students deserve to read.

We will use these books for many purposes. We will primarily use these texts for independent reading. Students will be able to check out these books for entertainment, to learn new information, or to be persuaded to accept new ideas. As a class, we will engage in complex discussions about the content of the series, highlighting dominant themes and storylines with which the students connect.

I want to show my students that their opinions are essential when it comes to choosing the literature we have in our classroom. Please help out with my class!
