Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Environmental Sustainability! The Right Thing To Do! A new vision for the way we grow our food. We all want to improve our environment and we can start by educating the leaders of tomorrow in environmentally sustainable garden practices. My students are impoverished and many come from one parent homes but when the students are outside in their garden I see smiles. Despite the many challenges they live with, when their first seed germinates I see an excitement for what will come next. The real joy for me comes when they return the following year and tell me they helped grandma in her garden or they started their own garden in their backyard.
My Project
The future of agriculture is changing rapidly. The students will be able to learn about these new trends by actually doing scientific research on their own plants that they plant in the requested hydroponic plant apparatus. Working in teams some groups will compare the plants grown hydroponically with plants grown in the school garden using the traditional materials. In their designs, they will try to create the system that will help the plants grow faster and provide a higher yield. Data will be recorded on their experimental plants and then shared digitally with the rest of the class and their peers.
As the students progress in their knowledge I am sure that they will be designing their own systems at their houses.
