Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Out in West Texas where I teach, we have a lot of students hungry to learn. These students put in long hours before and after school and we even go to competitions on Saturdays. Sometimes they wake up before six a.m. just to go! Our student population is very diverse but primarily Hispanic. A number of our students are English Language Learners from Mexico.
Even though diversity is great among the student population, the common thread among them is to learn things that have an impact on their lives.
When education is presented to them in a "real" way, they are excited about it.
It is very fulfilling as their teacher to see them work hard and put a lot of elbow grease into learning. At the end of the day, I just want to see these students develop a passion for learning. These students are ready to rise above the teacher shortages and school funding hurdles to achieve something great!
My Project
We have been inspired by Joy Schwartz at H. High School, and as a part of our curriculum in advanced robotics and computer science O. High School students are going to build a prosthetic limb for a child who cannot afford it.
Our students have an advanced skill set, and we are going to use this to reach out into the community and serve others in need.
Prosthetic limbs are very expensive, and families with young children have a hard time affording them due to the nature of their child's growth rate.
Our students who love robotics and engineering love solving problems and helping others. What better way to learn than by solving a problem that helps someone in extreme need?
We plan on working with the E-Nable organization to accomplish this task. They will help set us up with a family that can benefit from our project.
Our desire is to fund-raise for a 3D printer and design parts and put them together for a child to use. Our supplies include a 3D printer and filament needed to create a prosthetic limb.
This project would reinforce that learning is to be translated from the classroom into ways that help people in the real world. We want our students to take what they learn and make the world a better place especially for those less fortunate.
