Students as Makers

Help me give my students a 3D printer and supplies to help them make their ideas and visions a reality (or at least a model!)

My Students

I'm the librarian in a high school with some amazing programs. The issue is that unless a student is in a particular program, they don't always have access to resources that they could use in other classes. While the community I teach in is generally considered well-off, we have many students (and an increasing number) who are from low-income families.

This project is to give students from any program the opportunity to have access to a 3D Printer to make prototypes or models for a class, Science Fair or their required Graduation Project.

In order to accomplish this, a dedicated Makerspace is part of the plans for the new library opening in April 2020, and in addition to arts & crafts supplies we already have, we need a 3D Printer and the supplies to run it.

My Project

Having the 3D printer and materials will allow students to turn their ideas into reality (or prototypes) and also provide some real-world skills in using this technology. At this time, the only access to a 3D printer for students is for those enrolled in the technology education program. Students not in that program also have a need to create, model and build prototypes across disciplines, and the Library Media Center is the ideal place to provide that opportunity.

Because the library is available to all students, regardless of their program, any interested student will be able to design and create prototypes or models to enhance their projects and interests.

Students who want to make a prototype or model of the idea they have in any class, will have the ability to do so in the library's Makerspace.
