Our school is a public school in a rural setting. My class is made up of 2 grade levels: kindergarten and early 5's. These young students are ready for school however my goal for them is to become a strong, confident learner while together we set the foundation for their future academic success. I am honored to be part of their journey.
These amazingly curious and kind students, especially the early 5's students with higher sensory needs than others, are learners who are active and eager to learn.
Meeting their physical needs is a challenge in a traditional classroom setting. These students are born to move! I have instituted a sensory path and motor mom's for movement breaks outside of the classroom however I haven't been able to fund seating that moves with them. Recognizing and embracing this need in my young learners allows me to help them to developmentally as they become experienced learners.
My Project
Young students are not developmentally ready to sit in standard classroom seating. Disruptions can and will occur when asking young children to perform tasks before they are ready in their developmental stage. Giving young students opportunities to move helps their physical and gross motor development continuum. There are many seating choices available for younger children but not in the classroom setting.
Children are born to move and there is no fighting that natural fact!
The different seating styles will allow many students choices with their seats (and we all love choices) while moving in a safe and acceptable manner. Giving students choices allows them to feel valued and respected, giving them safe choices while honoring their needs nurtures the sense of community and strengthens relationships. Not only do the students benefit from this but so does the learning environment,
Students will love having "fun" seating choices along with traditional seating options within the classroom.
