Student Wordsmiths Want A Journal To Show Their Creativity
My students need software (Microsoft Publisher) and flash drives to write and publish their own literary journal. They also need a memory card to store photos.
Have you ever experienced the joy of seeing something you wrote or drew in a print publication? Our school does not have the resources to publish a magazine or even a newsletter. Our goal is to present students' writing, artwork, and class work in a journal to give to parents and visitors.
Our students come from an urban community in New York.
They are in grades 7 through 11 (ages 12-17). They are all minorities and some come from broken homes. They have not had many past successes in school, but the teachers work hard to show the value of education and raise their confidence levels.
Most of our students also have special needs. Many times, those special needs have gone unfulfilled until now. Our school works hard to identify the disabilities that some students have, and we prepare our classes to work with those needs.
My Project
Our school is starting a literary journal to get students excited about their writing. The literary journal will feature students' poetry, prose, essays, artwork, as well as samples from their science and math classes. This literary journal will not be funded by the school or district. Teachers will be volunteering and paying for the printing costs themselves. There are no funds available for materials, overtime, or printing.
We will use Microsoft Publisher to lay out the literary journal. Students will also get the opportunity to learn layout and desktop publishing skills as they participate in the design of the journal. They will also gain experience in writing, editing and rewriting their work for publishing which are valuable skills for the working world.

Donations to this project will make a huge difference in the lives of students who don't have much.
They have their creativity, their imaginations, and their drive. With this project, students can finally put their creativity on paper and proudly show their families and community what they're capable of producing.
