Help me give my students resources like scrapbook carts, play food, Chewelry and Chewable pencil toppers, and magnetic appliance rods to better tailor our classrooms to their educational needs!
I teach kindergarten in a Title I school in Florida. This means the percentage of our students who are considered economically disadvantaged is considerably high.
Each year I get to know 18 beautiful, curious, hilarious, loving little ones who brighten my days.
They love to learn and love to play!
In order to support this kind of classroom community, each year requires adjustments to certain procedures, the classroom layout, available materials, classroom management strategies, etc., based on what "works" for and motivates that particular group of kiddos and the individuals in that group.
My Project
I have recently decided to add a "market" area to my classroom so that I can integrate more imaginative play with play food. As Albert Einstein once said, "Play is the highest form or research!" The more I observe my students and do my own research, the more I believe in the power of "free play."
Although rigorous standards and testing create a large amount of pressure for teachers to drop everything else and hit hard on Reading, Math, and Writing skills, I am determined to hold on to some time for free play as I believe it strengthens critical thinking skills and the ability to problem solve.
We have one IRIS Scrapbook Cart and it is my favorite teacher discovery used to organize resources by theme (plants/ U.S. Symbols, etc.) so that they are easily accessible! We need two more carts in order to fit all of our resources. My "teacher kryptonite" has always been organization and these carts will save time and sanity!
The magnetic appliance rods will be used to hang anchor charts from. We are ALWAYS creating anchor charts for just about everything. My students reference these daily, and they allow them to take ownership of their own learning! My problem has been finding the wall space for all the anchor charts so that they can easily be seen by all students. The magnetic rods will solve this problem! I can stick them to the metal bars between our ceiling tiles and attach anchor charts with binder rings!
Finally, I have several unique educational needs this year including a couple of students who have an oral fixation and are constantly putting everything in their mouths. I'm hoping these Chewelry/Chewable pencil toppers will help!
