Student Selections: Books to Engage Reluctant Readers

Help me give my students engaging books to help develop their reading skills, and an interest in reading. Students chose these titles themselves after researching and sharing as a class.

My Students

Like most classrooms in the Hawai'i public school system, our classroom is very diverse ethnically, culturally, and economically. My students are a unique group of funny, smart, and talented people, who are badly in need of some engaging and thought provoking books to read. They often amaze me with the interesting and surprisingly thoughtful questions they ask in class, and how even those who claim to not like reading, often have some of the most interesting ideas to offer when given the opportunity to read something new in class.

I teach a 7th and 8th grade Reading Workshop, which is designed to help students who are reading below grade level.

As a result it is important for them to have the opportunity to read new books that they find interesting and engaging, to motivate them and to help them learn that reading can be fun, as well as to help them grow their skills.

My Project

We spent some time in class talking about books we liked and researching popular titles. My students collaborated to choose a class text that they wanted to read together, they are looking forward to reading these together! We will use these texts to practice our Oral Reading Fluency, spark class discussion, and work on other key literacy skills.

Many of my students have said that they do not like to read for pleasure, but often when we read together and are able to discuss characters, plot lines, context and what we think will happen next, they come alive with thoughts and theories.

I look forward to giving them the opportunity to find new titles that they enjoy, and the chance to learn and grow by reading them together.
