This quarter students are studying the theme of "Finding Light in Darkness" through the reading of Holocaust narratives. In the past, when I have asked students which of them know what the Holocaust was, I usually see no more than five hands go up. My aim is to offer students selections of fiction and non-fiction texts to help them learn about, and fully understand what happened during this period in history. This project is requesting a broad range of fiction and non-fiction books including Night, The Book Thief, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, and The Diary of a Young Girl. I want students to be able to explore this important and difficult topic in a way that allows them to really connect with what people at this time experienced, rather than just seeing it as an historical event. Personal accounts are one of the best ways to do this. I would like students to be able to make a choice in how they learn by offering them a selection of books, so that they can find a narrative that speaks to them. They will be reading their chosen narrative in Literature Circles so that they can process what they are reading together, and support and learn from one another.
