Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

What I love most about my students is their empathy and their desire to help others when given the opportunity. Many of them are deeply aware of the challenges faced by peers in our school community, especially around access to food and basic needs. When students are trusted to lead, they rise to the occasion with responsibility, collaboration, and pride.

This project is a student-led community service initiative focused on fighting hunger within our school community.

Students will plan, organize, and carry out a snack-pack drive that supports classmates and families experiencing food insecurity. Rather than simply receiving supplies, students will take ownership of every step of the process, from sorting and assembling snack packs to preparing them for distribution.

The snack items requested, including granola bars, crackers, cereal bars, fruit snacks, and protein-based snacks, will be used by students to assemble balanced, ready-to-go snack packs. These resources allow students to think critically about nutrition, equity, and wellness while ensuring that the packs are practical, accessible, and appealing for recipients of all ages.

Through this project, students will build leadership skills, teamwork, and a sense of civic responsibility. They will practice planning, decision-making, and communication as they work together toward a shared goal that benefits others beyond their classroom. Most importantly, they will see themselves as capable change-makers whose actions directly support the well-being of their school community.

This experience helps students learn that service is not something done for them, but something they can lead, creating a lasting impact on both those they serve and on their own growth as compassionate, engaged citizens.
