The Garmin watch has had a powerful impact on student learning by allowing us to connect math concepts to real-life movement and data. Instead of working only with abstract numbers, students are now able to collect authentic data such as distance, time, pace, and heart rate, and then analyze it in meaningful ways. Seeing real numbers generated from real actions has helped students better understand concepts like rates, averages, and trends.\r\n\r\nWhat excited students most was the opportunity to take learning outside the classroom. We went outdoors to test the watch by walking, jogging, and timing short distances, then returned to class to organize the data and create graphs. Students compared results, identified patterns, and discussed why their data looked different from others'. This hands-on experience made graphing and data analysis feel relevant and engaging, especially for students who struggle with traditional instruction but thrive with movement and real-world applications.\r\n\r\nBecause of this resource, I've been able to design interactive lessons that combine physical activity, technology, and math in a way that motivates students and deepens understanding. The Garmin watch has helped transform learning into an active, student-centered experience where curiosity and exploration drive engagement. Thank you for investing in innovative learning opportunities and helping my students see how math connects to their everyday lives.","fullyFundedDate":1766628526202,"projectUrl":"project/from-movement-to-math-learning-through/9971724/","projectTitle":"From Movement to Math: Learning Through Real-World Data","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Moran","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10340452_orig.jpg?crop=571,571,x122,y78&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1762224117722","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10340452"},{"teacherId":10340452,"projectId":9888170,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting my classroom and making this technology possible. The iPad has had an immediate and meaningful impact on how my students learn, engage, and interact with content. Since I do not have a touchscreen smart board in my classroom, the iPad has become an incredible alternative that allows me to model problems in real time, annotate examples, and dynamically respond to student thinking during lessons. Students can clearly see each step of the process, which has helped deepen understanding and reduce confusion.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most is the interactive nature of the lessons. I am now able to project diagrams, manipulate models, and adjust visuals based on student questions, making lessons more engaging and accessible. Students who previously struggled to follow static notes are now actively participating by asking questions, predicting outcomes, and explaining their reasoning. The ability to move, draw, and highlight key ideas live has transformed the way students interact with math content.\r\n\r\nBecause of this resource, I've been able to create more interactive, student-centered lessons that meet diverse learning needs. The iPad has helped bridge a technology gap in my classroom and has allowed me to provide an experience similar to classrooms with touchscreen boards. Students now use the space during independent work, reflection time, or when they need a brief moment to calm their emotions before rejoining the class.\r\n\r\nOne moment that stood out was when a student who was having a particularly difficult day chose to sit in the cozy corner instead of shutting down or leaving class. After a few minutes, they were able to regulate their emotions, rejoin their peers, and successfully complete their work. Since introducing this space, I've noticed improved focus, fewer disruptions, and stronger relationships between students and myself. The corner has helped normalize self-regulation and taught students that taking care of their mental health is both acceptable and encouraged.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will continue using this space as part of our classroom routines tied to social-emotional learning, reflection, and goal-setting. As soon as the Arteza dry erase markers and new pencils arrived, students' excitement was immediate, they eagerly asked when we would start using them and carefully set them up on their desks as if they were something truly special. During our Lunar New Year activities, students used the dry erase markers to model math problems, sketch symbols of the holiday, and revise their thinking without fear of making mistakes. The ability to erase and try again encouraged risk-taking, discussion, and perseverance, especially for students who often hesitate to participate.\r\nOne moment that stood out was watching students work collaboratively at whiteboard stations, explaining their reasoning out loud while adjusting their work in real time. The markers made learning feel interactive and low-pressure, while the new pencils ensured every student had the tools they needed to stay focused and engaged. For many of my students, having high-quality materials sent a powerful message: their learning matters, and they are worthy of care and investment.\r\nLooking ahead, students will continue using these materials as we move into upcoming math units that emphasize problem-solving, visual models, and group discussion. The dry erase markers will remain a staple for daily warm-ups, practice, and reflection, while the pencils support consistent participation and independence. The smart technology allows lessons to be more interactive, visual, and responsive to student thinking in real time. This has made abstract math concepts more concrete and accessible, especially for students who benefit from seeing and manipulating ideas rather than only hearing explanations.\r\n\r\nWhat excites students most is that the technology makes learning feel dynamic and empowering. They love being able to collaborate, annotate problems together, and see their work displayed and valued in front of the class. The smart tools have turned problem-solving into an active experience, increasing engagement, confidence, and willingness to take risks.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who were once hesitant to participate have especially thrived with this technology.
