This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students that I have the blessing to work with daily are extensions of their community. They are predominately students of color who come from environments farrowed with barriers to their development. These barriers are included but are not limited to mental health needs such as stress, trauma, anxiety, and social-emotional deficits. 85% of my student population receive free or reduced-price lunch and more than half are below grade level with regards to academic proficiency. They need support to improve their overall outcomes. Resources however can be difficult to come by and funding even more so. My students require a unique approach and delivery when providing them the support that nurtures their ability for healthy self-expression.
My Project
Unfortunately at this time, we do not have a school nurse. As a result, all staff members jump in when we can to support a student. Often students need band-aids for cuts or injuries that suffer during the school day. I need these band-aids to provide to them during school so that we can address the need and return them to their class. Or often I get female students on their menstrual cycle dealing with cramps, I am not able to give them aspirin but it would be so useful to provide them with a heating pad to help ease their discomfort and increase their ability to survive the school day! Or for students with concussions that can you the ice pack, or student who fall and injure themselves the ice packs would help. The blood pressure monitor is a unique but valuable resource to have as every once in a while we may have a student who is having a panic attack or anxiety attack and this can help in those moments.
