FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Ofstie's classroom raised $460
This project is fully funded
Hello! I'm a 6th grade English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in a very poor area of Brooklyn, NY. My students come from all different countries around the world, such as Haiti, Pakistan, Mexico, Uzbekistan, Panama, and Bangladesh, to name a few. The set of dictionaries that I currently have in my classroom are standard adult dictionaries, and thus are very inappropriate for my group of students. Doing dictionary exercises are futile, as the words are hard to find and the definitions are difficult to understand. The wording of the definitions are just not conducive to learning for 11-year-old beginning level English language learners! I found a dictionary in the bookstore the other day that made me so excited. It's called the American Heritage Student Dictionary. It is specifically for students in grades 6-9 with full-color photos and illustrations. A dictionary such as this would be so effective for teaching my students dictionary skills. As it is now, I can't tell my students to look up unknown words in the dictionary, as the definitions provide more confusion than assistance. These beautiful dictionaries would help my students learn new vocabulary, alphabetization skills, and dictionary skills for this school year and many, many years to come.
