My strings students love learning and are so motivated to play their instruments. Earlier this year we received funding for two 1/2 size cellos. Thank you so much!! My students will now become composers-- writing and publishing their own pieces. These books will enrich their knowledge of composers!
I teach strings to 5th graders in 4 elementary schools and have 140 beginning strings students in all.
I teach violin, viola, cello and bass in large classes of about 25 students. We meet 3 times a week for class. Strings is an elective, as part of our related arts core curriculum. My students are motivated and so ready to learn. They are always eager to learn and perform a new song--sometimes I have trouble getting them to leave class and go to lunch, because they like to play so much! As we come to the end of the year, my students will be learning about composers and then become composers-- they will create and perform their own music!
My Project
My students need 14 biographies about famous music composers for our orchestra class. These books will enrich my students' knowledge of music in a fun way. I love how the requested Mike Venezia books demonstrate the art of the period, photos of the period and have cartoons which captivate the interest of my young students. Sometimes my students forget their instrument; I will allow them to read a book about composers and then create their own graphic illustrations.
I believe having a portable classroom library will enrich the experience of my students.
If I have a few books for my bag which travels from school to school, I can quickly and easily pull out a book and teach about a composer who is in their music book. For example, as the students learn to play Ode to Joy by Beethoven, I can read about his life and then play for them the 9th Symphony.
