This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 3rd - 5th graders living in lower Manhattan. 85% of the students in my school are considered low income. As a reading intervention teacher, I work with students struggling with reading. Most of my students are a grade level or more below in reading. It has been a struggle to get them interested in reading, but I have recently found a few book series that hold their interest. The problem is, I don't have enough copies of these books to keep them reading until the end of the school year. I would also like to use these books to run a book club with the students so I can help monitor their comprehension to ensure they are getting the most out of their reading experiences.

My Project

My 3rd - 5th graders have requested humorous books and graphic novels. Graphic novels give students a sense of accomplishment as they can use their other processing skills to help them understand the story line while still reading longer books.

They have also shown interest in humorous books by authors such as Roald Dahl and Louis Sachar.

We have a few of these books floating around the school, but not enough to read them in small groups to help students with comprehension on a more personalized level.

Students will use these books both for their independent reading time and in small groups for book club. I try to create fun and engaging comprehension activities. For Goldilocks and the 3 bears, the students wrote an additional scene for the book. Students chose to write about when Goldilocks tried on the clothes of the three bears and watched their various televisions. We would be so thankful for any contributions to our growing library and we look forward to sharing our work with our donors in the future.
