Struggling Readers Learn Social Studies

My students need 40+ books to explore Social Studies topics at their reading levels (ages 5-12).

My Students

Have you ever tried to read something in your Social Studies book and it was at too high a level to understand? This is the frustration that I had last year.

Many of my students are not reading at grade level and are pulled out for reading support.

This affects them in all areas, including Social Studies. When you are reading at a 1st grade reading level many people feel that you will not be able to learn like everyone else. I want to change that idea and turn all my students into successful critical thinkers of Social Studies no matter what level the student reads at.

My Project

I want to empower my students with text that is easily readable for them. This building of success will transfer in every area of learning. Specifically, the books will be used in conjunction with centers that were established my first year of teaching social studies. The lower level readers were the students that struggled and this will ensure more success for these students. A little success gives a mile of motivation!

This project is important because my district has full inclusion as a practice and this now includes Social Studies.

The funding to support these students were not offered. It is my duty as their teacher to help make Social Studies real for ALL students, including the low readers.
