I teach at a 5th and 6th grade school. 100% of our students qualify for free lunch. Our school is very diverse with 30% white, 50% black and 20% Hispanic. I teach in-school reading and math tutorial.
These students are in the lowest 10% of our school.
They truly crave and desire to know about their world. They want to be successful with their reading but also want the content to be something that they are interested in and will hold their attention.
My Project
The ability to read a great book is not always available to our students. Their parents do not have the funds to purchase books and even limited transportation to get to a library.
The facial expression of a student finding a special book that tweaks their interest is priceless.
This project will allow me to keep books in my classroom for them to use and enjoy.
School classrooms need to provide a wide range of books to encourage students to read. With the purchase of fiction and non-fiction books, students will broaden their horizon by the introduction of the variety of books.
