My Students

I have a class of 10 students, ages 12-13 years, who lack emotional and social skills in appropriate situations and need intentional instruction to learn these basic communication skills. Each student was specifically selected by administrators and school counselors to attend a class to help them more fully develop social skills and to provide opportunities in leadership through service learning. A student led project completed earlier this year showed how gifted these overlooked students really are. These students created a cardboard arcade with a prize counter. They invited our special needs students to come and play their arcade games and gave out tickets and prizes to winners. Each of my students expressed how fun it was to see the excitement others had over something they created. This was empowering.

These students lack several skills when talking to their peers or adults.

COVID-19 has disrupted crucial family time where appropriate conversation is developed. Many of my students' parents are not physically or emotionally available to help them learn to converse in a small group setting about topics that are acceptable and where listening is required to continue the natural flow of dialogue.

My Project

Many of my students have expressed their desire to learn more about cooking and to share culinary creations with others in class.

Due to COVID-19, family structure and routine has been disrupted.

These 10 students have seen an increase in stress and anxiety within their home environment, and a decrease in parental attention and engagement. Taking time during the class hour to cook, we can work together to create culinary art, converse spontaneously and appropriately, and cultivate healthy relationships. This safe space in the classroom will provide natural opportunities to attend to social-emotional needs in a structured, but relaxed atmosphere. This is a student led and project-based-learning activity. Students asked for this project and my class needs cooking equipment.

The requested kitchenware and tools will allow students to continue to have project-based learning. The table settings will enable students to learn and practice social skills of speaking and listening in a small groups. The dishtowels and rack provided for clean-up give students the accomplishment of seeing a task completed from beginning to end. Students are expected to cleanup and care for all used items. The tote will be used to transport and store kitchenware and tools. The routines and motions of cooking, eating, and cleaning together will cultivate a sense of comfort and accomplishment.
