Many of my students have expressed their desire to learn more about cooking and to share culinary creations with others in class.
Due to COVID-19, family structure and routine has been disrupted. These 10 students have seen an increase in stress and anxiety within their home environment, and a decrease in parental attention and engagement. Taking time during the class hour to cook, we can work together to create culinary art, converse spontaneously and appropriately, and cultivate healthy relationships. This safe space in the classroom will provide natural opportunities to attend to social-emotional needs in a structured, but relaxed atmosphere. This is a student led and project-based-learning activity. Students asked for this project and my class needs cooking equipment.
The requested kitchenware and tools will allow students to continue to have project-based learning. The table settings will enable students to learn and practice social skills of speaking and listening in a small groups. The dishtowels and rack provided for clean-up give students the accomplishment of seeing a task completed from beginning to end. Students are expected to cleanup and care for all used items. The tote will be used to transport and store kitchenware and tools. The routines and motions of cooking, eating, and cleaning together will cultivate a sense of comfort and accomplishment.
