Mrs. G. from MI is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need an accurate electronic balance to measure yields from experiments and a strong magnet for each group to separate mixtures of magnetic and non-magnetic materials in Chemistry class.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Powerful magnets and accurate measurements add up to a powerful lab experience for high school Chemistry students. My tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students in a high-need public charter school will benefit greatly by having the basics available to them.
Chemistry is required for all high school students in our small school, which has been hit hard by a lack of funding. We are doing our best with existing supplies, which include a couple of triple beam balances and a kitchen-grade electronic balance as well as several small magnets that can attract (but not lift!) a small paperclip. This makes for unconvincing demonstrations and lab activities. Working with low-quality equipment also leaves our students feeling that their education is not valuable.
The electronic balance I've selected is accurate to .01g and can measure masses up to 200g. It measures masses in grams, newtons, and ounces. This is a reasonably priced, accurate and useful electronic balance for measuring starting masses and yields in the Chemistry lab. The Alnico magnets I've selected are powerful, permanent magnets, and will be useful for demonstrating physical properties as well as for separating magnetic materials from non-magnetic materials. These items are high-quality items which will last for many years and serve the needs of students both in my Chemistry classes and in other science classes as needed in our K-12 school.
Your help will give these students the opportunity to start the school year strong with necessary lab equipment. These students care about learning and enjoy science. They appreciate feeling that their achievements and growth are valued. Your support will help them to work toward these inspiring goals - to learn to solve scientific problems in a safe, high-quality classroom laboratory.
