I am so blessed to teach at a Title One school where most of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. Why am I blessed to work at a school that most would consider a challenge? I am blessed because I have a wonderful class of energetic, eager to learn and succeed group of twenty-five kindergartners. My students are learning how to read, add and subtract fluently in small, teacher-led groups and independently during center time.
My goal is to continue to foster their desire to increase their reading levels and become fluent mathematicians.
My Project
By the end of kindergarten, students are now expected to be able to read books with at least two to four lines of text. That is a huge step from previous years where kindergartners went to school to play and learn letters. Kindergartners are also now expected to be fluent in numbers, addition and subtraction before moving on to first grade.
Most students who walk through my classroom doors do not know a single letter or number, but they come in so excited to learn.
It is my job to not only teach them their letters or numbers but how to read books with two to four lines of text and add/subtract fluently to five.
The materials requested will help small groups of students to successfully work independently and stay engaged in during center time.
