This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember going bowling with your parents when you were a kid? Well I do and it was so much fun! Back then, I never realized how much math mom was doing to keep score! This would be an amazing experience to give all of my students as this school year comes to an end.

I have a dynamic group of 6th graders this year!

I teach two periods of math and science and one of ELD and PE. Our school is located in a high poverty, high risk area. Over 75% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Nearly 50% of my students are English language learners. Unfortunately, with the gouging budget cuts, there is no funding for paper, let alone field trips! My students enjoy learning new math concepts and building their vocabulary. They love playing games and PE even more!

My Project

When I teach a math lesson, some of my students ask me, "when will I use this?" I tell them EVERYDAY! This trip will be a wonderful way to show them how math is used in "real life." I want to teach them the rules of bowling and how to keep their own score. These will be powerful lessons that relate to state math standards in algebra and statistics. They will not only compute their own scores, but calculate the mean, median, and mode of their individual and team scores. We will later compare this data with the other teams. In addition, this trip will allow my students to go on adventure out of the neighborhood. They will experience life outside of the classroom while building their vocabulary since most of my students are not familiar with multiple meaning words such as strike and spare. Finally, our district is focusing on "student wellness" and this trip may instill in them a life long physical activity that they enjoy.

For many, this will be their first trip to a bowling alley and their first time applying practical math skills. They will see how math is used in everyday life while having fun! My students will have the memory of this wonderful trip for the rest of their lives. They may also find it to be a great way of getting some exercise! By supporting this project, 77 sixth graders will end this year on a happier, healthier, mathletic note!
