My Students

This project focuses on students who are hearing impaired attending first thru fifth grade in a deaf education program. They are eager to try new things and be involved in challenging activities. They learn best when engaged in interactive learning.

In the past, we have enjoyed trying new healthy foods through masked sampling, including mango, acai juice and Greek yogurt.

A few were able to identify the foods and we were able to practice the signs. They made the cutest faces! Plus, we have enjoyed dancing where they taught me how to floss and I taught them a Zumba routine. Currently, the third and fourth graders are working with me on cultural enrichment activities such as making paper cup hats for Hispanic Heritage and this month we are making cookies for Diwali.

As significant as their hearing impairment may be, they are not confined to a box defined by anyone or anything.

My Project

Last year, the middle school students inspired me to bring yoga to the elementary grades. When free time was available in the class, the middle school students would engage in yoga by watching videos on YouTube.

This year I want to bring the real experience of a yoga class to the elementary students.

After obtaining my national yoga certification last summer, we will use these yoga mats to stretch our bodies and our minds through numerous yoga poses. The flip chart is to give the students a map of the poses since most are unable to hear any cueing.

By learning the various poses and especially the breathing, the students will have a tool to use for when their emotions or behavior overcome their self-control. The yoga is also another way to enhance their social emotional learning in order to take their breathing and reflection with them not just to the classroom but also outside of school.
