Last year, the middle school students inspired me to bring yoga to the elementary grades. When free time was available in the class, the middle school students would engage in yoga by watching videos on YouTube. This year I want to bring the real experience of a yoga class to the elementary students. After obtaining my national yoga certification last summer, we will use these yoga mats to stretch our bodies and our minds through numerous yoga poses. The flip chart is to give the students a map of the poses since most are unable to hear any cueing. By learning the various poses and especially the breathing, the students will have a tool to use for when their emotions or behavior overcome their self-control. The yoga is also another way to enhance their social emotional learning in order to take their breathing and reflection with them not just to the classroom but also outside of school.
