This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There is great diversity among the students who come to my classroom, and many come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Most of my students have learning challenges, which requires specialized instruction tailored to their individual needs.
The students that I support are in the fourth and fifth grade and are very motivated and excited for our math intervention group.
We are currently working on math intervention in the morning to boost overall number sense and develop flexibility with numbers.
My Project
The "Daily Math Fluency" kit will be used for intervention groups to address gaps in math skills. It is very difficult for students to progress and feel confident in math class when they are missing some of the foundational skills.
This Math Fluency kit will provide daily number talks and number strings to help build flexibility with numbers and deepen overall number sense.
The activities support concepts such as: decomposing numbers, finding a "friendly" number, 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction, doubling numbers, multiplication visual strategies, and many other numerical concepts. Visual models and manipulatives are included such as a 120 bead Rekenrek and open number lines. These tools will help support this process by making abstract concepts more concrete for individual learners.
