Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning a foreign language can be so much fun in a multi-media classroom! My classroom rewards risk-taking students who perform for their peers, applaud each other's efforts, and sing along to songs we study! We act, we laugh, we collaborate, and we use lots of Spanish every day.

Many of my students are interested in careers in the medical, health, or scientific fields, and being able to learn practical Spanish is extremely important to them.

Our school has a strong foreign language program, and many students continue beyond the one mandatory year of language to take AP-level classes. My classes are essential to this flow. Our school is large, but retains a small school feel. Students are well-known by their teachers, and receive extensive academic and emotional support so they can graduate college and career ready. Seventy percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and approximately thirteen percent receive special education services. Our 4-year graduation rate exceeds the citywide average (by almost 30 percentage points) and we have a terrific 4-year college acceptance rate.

My Project

Now more than ever, students need to learn a variety of ways to relieve stress. I learned to craft from my grandparents and have always relied on it as an escape from the hectic pace of everyday life. Focusing on a project is like practicing mindfulness - one's breathing slows as the outside world and preoccupations slowly fade into the background.

With crochet hooks, embroidery needles, and some other basic supplies, my students can relieve their unusually high levels of anxiety while they learn a new and useful skill.

As part of our in-person school day, we will be providing students with social-emotional support and the opportunity to participate in clubs. My craft club will allow students to learn new skills, relieve stress, and talk about anything that is on their minds. Students are often more willing to open up about their feelings if their hands are occupied. In addition, by learning to embroider or crochet, they will automatically

enter into a worldwide community of crafters. In this time of social distancing, everybody needs to feel connected to others! For that reason, we will also be giving students at home the option to join the club via Zoom.
